FOSTERING GROWTH: SAL HOSTEL’S RECOGNITION FOR TRANSFORMATIVE TRAINING.

On August 1st, the Directorate of Student Affairs (DOSA) made a significant visit to Sal Hostel, where Dr. Akowuah, the DOSA representative for Obuasi Campus, presented a certificate of recognition. This acknowledgment celebrated the hostel’s participation in a transformative two-day workshop aimed at training hostel managers. The certificate was received by the porter, Fataw, symbolizing the collective effort and dedication of the entire hostel community.

Earlier, on May 14th, Sal Hostel attended a meeting on the Kumasi Campus, which brought together hostel managers, hall assistants, porters, and caretakers, all united by a common goal: to enhance the living experience for students. One of the primary focuses of the meeting was conflict management, an essential skill in communal living situations. Participants learned that conflict is inevitable, and equipping hostel staff with tools to manage disputes is crucial. The training emphasized strategies for fostering communication and resolving disagreements amicably, which is vital for maintaining harmony. This commitment to effective conflict resolution aligns with the ongoing efforts of the Committee of Hall Administrators (CoHA), which, under the leadership of DOSA, champions student welfare at KNUST through its annual training for hall assistants and hostel managers. This year’s program further equipped residence staff with the skills necessary to address the evolving needs of students.

For many participants, including Mr. Amusa Salami, warden assistant of Sal Hostel and a first-time attendee, the training was not only informative but also deeply impactful. Mr. Salami noted that these initiatives would significantly aid private hostel owners in aligning their practices with university expectations.

The workshop also underscored the importance of instilling discipline among students. It is imperative for all residents to understand that the rules of the school apply universally, whether in a hostel or elsewhere. Policies such as no bullying, no smoking, and maintaining a respectful atmosphere are non-negotiable. Hostel staff are encouraged to be vigilant and fair in their judgments while handling conflicts, ensuring all students feel safe and valued.

Another significant aspect discussed was the role of hostel staff in managing the social lives of students, particularly those at odds with their roommates. Creating a supportive community where students can thrive socially is essential. Staff members are urged to facilitate open dialogues between roommates, helping them navigate their differences and fostering an environment of understanding and respect.

The initiatives undertaken by Sal Hostel, along with the training provided by DOSA and CoHA, reflect a strong commitment to enhancing student experiences. By focusing on conflict management, instilling discipline, and supporting social interactions, hostel staff can create a nurturing environment that promotes personal growth and academic success. Every effort counts in building a community where all students feel safe, respected, and empowered.
